Introduction

Why do we give homework?

To monitor and evaluate a child’s work and to reinforce classroom learning.

What is the purpose of this policy?

So that every staff member is aware of the amount of homework to be given on what days.

Rationale

To monitor and evaluate a child’s work and to reinforce classroom learning. San Nicholas seeks to enable each child to develop his/her potential. Homework encourages pupils to work independently and take responsibility for their assignments.

Aims Of Giving Homework

  • To benefit pupil learning.
  • To reinforce class work.
  • To Develop study skills.
  • To promote a similar approach to homework across all classes.
  • To Strengthen home/school liaison.

Guideslines For Homework Setting

  • All classes will receive homework on Monday – Thursday.
  • Junior Infants commencing in October.
  • No homework on Friday night as agreed at parents/teacher meeting.
  • All children receive homework – provision made for those with special needs.
  • Homework seen as reinforcement of what was done in class.
  • Each teacher is responsible for setting class homework.
  • Parents are expected to sign homework journals.
  • Journals will be checked if there is concern about child’s work.
  • Special occasions justify no written homework.
  • J.I. / S.I → 10-15 minutes approx.
  • 1st / 2nd → up to 30 minutes
  • 3rd /4th → up to 45 minutes
  • 5th / 6th → up to one hour.

Checking Of Homework

  • Daily by Teacher.
  • Homework can be related to behaviour (senior pupils) and is used as part of the system of rewards and sanctions.
  • If homework is particularly well done it can be presented to others in class sticker/star reward system.
  • Alternatively, when homework is not done or is untidy, a verbal warning/note in homework journal. Homework to be completed following night.
  • Parents to be contacted in extreme circumstances.
  • If issue is not resolved refer to Principal.
  • Classroom study skills can be applied to homework.
  • Parents are made aware of the agreed procedures.

Homework Club

Commenced Sept’07 with provision for 10 (Jun) children and 10 (Sen) children . Children chosen at Teacher’s discretion, programme ongoing.

2015 – 2016 Homework Club running 4 evenings a week, caters for forty children.

Pupils Responsibility

  • To report to his/her teacher difficulties arising with homework.
  • It is the pupil’s duty to copy down homework from the board, complete it and get parental signatures.
  • If there are difficulties approach teacher the following morning or present a note from parents.

Parents Responsibility

  • Parents need to check nightly that the homework is done and that the diaries are signed.
  • Parents intervention depends on workload, child’s ability and homework content.
  • The school takes into consideration the language and literacy levels of individual families.

Success Criteria

Tasks and Tests set by teacher who evaluates and monitors them, and who is also solely responsible for correcting and placing comments on all written work of students in their care.
